Pokémon DPPt: Eterna City Big Band Jazz Arrangement

These days, I find myself longing for the past, when things seemed so simple. There's no better Sinnoh music suited for that than Eterna City: "the town that ties the past to now."

Man, to go back to a time when things were so simple, I could really go for that right now. Perhaps the future will bring that for us, only time can tell! I think this is _the_ most nostalgia inducing song for me in Sinnoh, mainly because it's played in locations in-game that have a lot of history, like Eterna City & Celestic Town. The original track always sounded a bit like an old dude sitting in his rocking chair, depicted by the wood blocks in the original orchestration. I thought I'd take that vintage / nostalgic sentiment and present it in an sort-of-Ellington style big band arrangement! I arranged this for my Sinnoh Big Band concert on March 1st back at Berklee, since I knew I wanted to write a big band bari feature ballad, and we sadly never got to record live with that band... but this version is still pretty dang good!

I'm really happy with the orchestration used at the beginning of this track, since very rarely would you ever see bari sax AND bass clarinet being used at the same time in a big band chart - usually if anyone's playing bass clarinet, it's the doubling bari player, who would obviously not be playing both at the same time. The texture at the beginning just feels so homey and nostalgic to me, something about the bass clarinet does that for me! If you've ever seen The Music Man, there's a really awesome 12/8 bass clarinet riff in "Marion the Librarian" that I probably subconsciously borrowed from in this particular video. Of course, there's a lot of close position sax soli writing in this, because that's one of my favorite sounds, and it's very indicative of writing from the big band era of the 40's! 3:22 in this arrangement was SO much fun to play live. It's the climax of the arrangement where everything SLAPS and pulls out all the stops (literally, I didn't know that the expression "pulling out all the stops" actually refers to an organ pulling out all the stops...!) And of course I had to write a big fortissimo honking low A on the bari because that's what baris do best... haha. At the end of the arrangement, we have what I think is my first ever cadenza in one of my YouTube arrangements! Had I not written this primarily for a live band, I don't think I would have put that in, but I'm so glad I did! That out-of-time-ness is something that I think a lot of normal YouTube covers / arrangements can neglect sometimes, since a lot of arranging is done on the grid in notation software (which I certainly do, and am guilty of over-using probably).

Thanks to my wonderful friends for joining me on filling out the big band parts of this arrangement! That high F# in the lead trumpet part is waaaay out of my range, and Will nailed it :)
