Pokémon DPPt: Veilstone City Big Band Jazz Arrangement

I only realized this year what the pun in Maylene's name is. She's the fighting type gym leader known as the "barefoot fighting genius." In her official artwork, she's balanced on one foot, leaning back. May Lean? Maylene? Sigh. BOMB music though... decided to give it a Nestico / Basie spin! This might be the most "real jazz" I've ever done on this channel, and I'm okay with that.

Here's the last big band arrangement I have planned for the Year of Sinnoh! I arranged this tune for the live shows I played with the Sinnoh Big Band at the very start of March, and MAN, if there was ever a Sinnoh tune to arrange for big band, Veilstone is such an obvious choice. It's such a swanky place, with atmosphere that's immediately present when you enter from the west for the first time. Dingy streets, a department store, a casino, and some meteorites on the side of town... this is a Sinnoh city if I've ever seen one.

I transposed the arrangement down a half step from the original day version, since concert Eb major fits much better on horns than concert E does. Playing in a big band throughout my high school years made me a huge fan of Sammy Nestico's and Count Basie's big band writing skills, and that style was perfectly suited for this tune. I started off by orchestrating the original 12 bar blues tune for just a combo instrumentation, then developed the arrangement to bring in the full band, constantly swapping between sections. It was a lot of fun to figure out which sections got which parts from the original track! Following that, I wrote a few solo sendoffs and shout choruses in the style of Nestico / Basie to keep the arrangement going, while always trying to tie the melodic motifs that I used back to the original melody of the tune, in effort to keep the song feeling cohesive. This arrangement might have one of the highest concentrations of original material that I've added to one of these arrangements in a long time... and I am very okay with that! Also had to throw in a couple of cheesie Basie licks and spontaneous loud brass hits here and there, I love that stuff, especially when done live by a tight band! Big thanks to everyone in this band for playing for me and making this arrangement SWING HARD!
