This is just an excerpt from a video I'll post this Saturday at 4.30 pm, featuring my organ transcription of the “Infernal Dance of King Kastchei”, from the Firebird Suite by Igor Stravinsky.
I've performed this work during the second year of the masterclasses attended at the Zürich Tonhalle, where the legendary professor Jean Guillou taught.

This recording of mine may also be considered a document of an organ “that was”, as the Kleuker and Steinmeyer instrument is no longer at the Zürich Tonhalle, but in the Catholic Cathedral of Koper in Slovenia.

I have always been a great admirer of Stravinsky’s genius, which he demonstrated well in his three artistic periods: Russian, Neoclassical and Serial.
The Firebird belongs to the Russian period, undoubtedly the most aesthetically “impetuous”, an aspect that goes well with the organ that often, especially in Italy, is mistakenly seen as a “static” “not very modern” “boring” instrument (!!).

The score that runs in this video is obviously NOT my transcription but an arrangement for piano and has the sole purpose of providing a visual trace of the piece.

Inspired by a Russian fairy tale, the story of “The Firebird” sees the fight between an immortal magician named Kastchei, symbol of evil, and the Firebird, that represents the force of good.
Prince Ivan happens to find himself in a beautiful enchanted garden that belongs to the infernal Kastchei, who petrifies men and imprisons women.
Ivan sees a strange creature, the Firebird, with red-gold plumage and manages to capture it; the prince, listening to his pleas, frees him, receiving in exchange for his gesture one of the feathers that has the power to protect from Kastchei's evil spells.
In his castle the magician holds thirteen princesses prisoner, who, during the night, come out and start dancing. Ivan approaches the most beautiful one who tells him how the magician transforms those who come into the garden into stone statues.
At dawn the girls must return to the castle; the prince, now in love, tries to follow the girl and does not give up even when she begs him not to go any further. At the sound of an alarm, a small group of monsters, servants of the magician, capture Ivan; Kastchei casts his spell, but the golden feather, waved by the prince in front of the magician, calls the Firebird who drags the wicked into an infernal dance (the one proposed in this video) annihilating them.
At the bird's direction, the prince finds the large egg containing the magician's soul and destroys it, thus ending all spells and Kastchei's life, reuniting him with the princess.
