The Rule of ISIS

Under ISIS rule in Iraq and Syria, life for the people was marked by extreme brutality and oppression. The terrorist group operated from their capital Raqqa and imposed a strict interpretation of Islamic law, implementing harsh punishments such as public executions, amputations, and floggings for perceived violations. Basic freedoms were severely restricted, with strict dress codes imposed on women, and entertainment and cultural activities banned. Religious and ethnic minorities faced persecution, displacement, and even ethnic cleansing. ISIS perpetrated a genocidal campaign against the Yazidi people in Iraq in 2014: killing thousands, enslaving women and children, and forcing mass displacements.
ISIS controlled education, promoting its radical ideology while suppressing dissent. The economy suffered as infrastructure was destroyed, and the population lived in constant fear due to the group's extreme enforcement measures. The reign of ISIS was characterized by widespread human rights abuses and a stark deterioration in the quality of life for those living under its rule.
