"Global and Migrant Indigeneity: Quechua Language Reclamation in the United States" with Américo Mendoza-Mori

Quechua, the most widely spoken Indigenous language family of the Americas with millions of speakers in the Andes, is considered endangered by UNESCO. Additionally, due to violence and economic hardship in their home countries, Andean migrants have fled their indigenous communities, flocking to different regions in the Global North, including the United States. Quechua language revitalization and reclamation initiatives have emerged within these diasporic communities in this country to further promote the language and to foster community empowerment, particularly among Latinx youth. This presentation will explore how these different projects and communities in the U.S. contribute to the global advancement and relevance of this indigenous language.
With a Ph.D. from the University of Miami, Florida, and a B.A. from Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima, Peru, Américo Mendoza-Mori is an interdisciplinary scholar trained in literary, linguistic, and cultural studies. He previously worked at the University of Pennsylvania, where he founded their Quechua language program, and at Harvard University he currently teaches courses on Latinx and Indigenous Studies. Co-founder of the Quechua Alliance and of the international conference Thinking Andean Studies, Mendoza-Mori’s work has appeared in a variety of academic journals, has been presented at the United Nations and featured in The New York Times, a TEDx talk, and NPR.

El quechua, la familia de lenguas indígenas más hablada en el continente americano y que cuenta con millones de hablantes en los Andes, se encuentra en peligro de extinción según la UNESCO. Por otra parte, debido a la violencia y penurias económicas existentes en sus países de origen, emigrantes andinos han huido en masa de sus comunidades indígenas hacia varias regiones del hemisferio norte, incluidos los EEUU. Dentro de estas comunidades en diáspora en este país, han surgido iniciativas de revitalización lingüística y reinvindicación del quechua, no solo para promover la lengua sino también el empoderamiento comunitario, especialmente entre la juventud latina. Esta sesión abordará cómo estos diversos proyectos y comunidades quechua en los EEUU contribuyen al avance y a la relevancia globales de esta lengua indígena.
Américo Mendoza-Mori –doctor por la University of Miami, Florida, y licenciado por la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos en Lima, Perú– es investigador multidisciplinar con especialización en estudios literarios, lingüísticos y culturales. Ha trabajado previamente en la University of Pennsylvania, donde fundó el programa de lengua quechua, y actualmente en Harvard University, imparte cursos sobre estudios indígenas y LatinX Studies. Mendoza-Mori fue cofundador de la Alianza Quechua y del congreso internacional Thinking Andean Studies.
