The Amazing Spider-Man has been a staple of videogames since the eighties, and throughout the evolution of Spider-Man and the history of Spider-Man, he’s starred in dozens of games. All Spider Man games are unique in their own way, but the best Spider Man games bring the charm, personality, and Spider-Man gameplay that replicates the webslinging action of the Marvel Comics superhero. Spiderman videogames survived the ‘80s bust and subsequent rejuvenation in the ‘90s, and future Spiderman games would continue the innovations established in our first episode of the history of Spiderman games.
On this episode of Playing with Powers, we continue to track the evolution of Spider-Man videogames as the medium continued to evolve all the way to the Insomniac Spider-Man PS4 game. But, until Spiderman PS4, we first have to go through Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage, a brawler for 16-bit systems like the SNES and Sega Genesis first. From there, there were a few 16-bit stragglers before the developers of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater released their Neversoft Spiderman game. The Spiderman 2000 game was his first step into 3 dimension, and it was a glorious love letter to the hero and his comic book companions.
