Virtual Hike 4K | Winter on Ypsilon Lake Trail | Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

Winter hikes offer spectacular views and experiences you don’t get when the weather warms up. Come with me to Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado where the trail soon turns to packed snow as we make our way up to Ypsilon Lake under a gentle snowfall. The last hikers on the trail, we’ll arrive at the iced-over lake well after sunset. I did not bring my snowshoes with me, but as we near the top of the trail I wished I had. I did a lot of post-holing – sometimes up to my hips!

On this hike, we climb 2077 feet (633 m) to the high point of the trail at 10,741 feet (3,274 m) altitude. Shortly before the end, we’ll pass by two small, shallow lakes that are pretty much just open, snowy areas. I didn’t know their names at the time but have since learned that the first one is Chipmunk Lake and the other is Upper Chipmunk Lake. There are two lakes above Ypsilon, but it was too late in the evening to make a safe ascent.
