Greece and Bulgaria Have Very Different Stories About This Dog

Every conflict has two sides. In the case of the War of the Stray Dog — the 1925 incident where Greece invaded Bulgaria after a border shooting — Greece and Bulgaria have dramatically different versions of what actually happened.

The Greek version: a soldier accidentally crossed the border chasing a runaway dog, was shot by Bulgarian guards without warning, and Greece had a right to demand accountability.

The Bulgarian version: Greek soldiers deliberately crossed the border in a provocation, and the guards were simply doing their job defending sovereign territory.

Who's telling the truth? Probably both, a little. The reality, as with most Balkan incidents, is murkier than either side admits — shaped by decades of tension, post-WWI trauma, and a volatile Greek dictator looking for a reason to flex military muscle.

This short digs into the competing narratives around one of history's most bizarre conflicts, and asks the question: does it even matter whose fault it was, when the result was this absurd?
