How a Giant Vulture Became Romania's Most Famous Train Passenger

In the early 20th century, Romanian train travelers passing through Buzau encountered something unexpected on the station platform: a massive bearded vulture, completely unbothered, accepting food from human hands.

His name was Ilie. He had a wingspan of over two meters. He had the regal bearing of someone who absolutely did not need your permission to be there. And over the years, he became one of the most recognizable figures in the entire region.

Travelers would specifically seek him out. Station workers considered him a colleague of sorts. Photographs of Ilie circulated as informal postcards. He was, by any reasonable definition, a local celebrity — one who happened to be a large predatory bird known for eating bones and dyeing his feathers rust-orange.

The bearded vulture, or lammergeier, is one of the rarest and most spectacular birds in Europe. In Ilie's time, they were rarely seen by ordinary people. For the residents of Buzau, he was a daily miracle so familiar it had become routine.
