Is Hamilton Hoping The FIA's Actions Will Reduce Red Bull Advantage?

The 2021 Styrian GP, was one of the few times during the Hybrid Era where Mercedes looked absolutely at a loss. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won from Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton by the biggest ever margin at the Red Bull Ring. One of the reasons suggested behind this is the fact that Red Bull are continuously developing their 2021 car while Mercedes are not. Hamilton has now set his hopes on an upcoming technical directive

Hamilton Hopes For Level Playing Field

Hamilton began by broaching the subject of bendy wings

“Naturally they have that really good wing that bends, which they’ve had most of the year”

He added how Red Bull’s continued development isn’t something happening at Mercedes

“I think they’ve been developing it for, as far as I’m aware or what I’m told, for quite a long time, which we haven’t, so that would definitely be part of it”

He then explained why Mercedes are hampered by their current approach

“If we’re not going to develop and improve our car for the rest of the year, this is the result you’re going to see, because, as I said, they’ve really eked out performance in these last few races, wherever it’s been, whether it’s been in France with the engine or the new wing, whichever it is”

He signed off by hoping that an upcoming technical directive brings more parity

“But there’s another TD (technical directive) coming out for the wings. I don’t know if they’re stopping the bendiness or not but maybe that will level the playing field”

Max Verstappen “had a really enjoyable race, the car was working well and [he] always enjoys driving on this track”

His teammate, Sergio Perez pointed out that they “had a slow stop that impacted the race as [they] gave the position to [Valtteri] Bottas”

He is further looking “forward to next weekend where [they] will try again to step up on the podium together” with Max

Their team principal Christian Horner feels that “to win at [their] home track, secure four back-to-back wins and a 10th victory with Honda is a real achievement”

Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas, meanwhile has suggested that they “need to accept that [Red Bull] are ahead at the moment and use it as motivation”

His team principal Toto Wolff added that with “Valtteri, [they] picked the pocket of Red Bull to claim P3, and he did a fantastic job to eke out the tyre life to the last corner and stay ahead of Perez”

“[They] knew the time would come when it became tougher for [them] - and it's here right now” Wolff explained

He further added they “will need to analyse the race, see what more [they] could have squeezed out of the package, and keep on chipping away each weekend”

McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo is of the opinion that they “should've been fifth and sixth again as [they] were last week”

He explained that his “start was great [and he] put [himself] in a really good position on the Medium tyre and the race was looking up from there, and then [he] lost power”

“[They] were able to fix it on the steering wheel, but everything [they] gained, [they] then lost, and [they] were back where [they] started”

Their team principal Andreas Seidl confirmed that “Daniel had a great start from P13 to P9 in the early stages”

“But then a temporary loss of power meant four cars overtook him, which pretty much ended his race. Daniel, sorry for that” Seidl added

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc has explained that “it’s a bitter sweet feeling. The incident on lap 1 put [them] on the back foot”

“It’s a shame because [they] lost a good opportunity to bring home an even better result. From the second lap onwards, [he] would rank this as one of [his] best races so far in Formula 1”

Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel feels that “it is always very easy to say [they] should have done things differently in hindsight, but [they] are focused on coming back stronger next weekend”

He added that “when everyone is so closely matched [in the midfield], [traffic and lack of grip] can really impact your race and the final result”
Can Aston Martin play a significant role in the midfield battle in 2021?
