F1 Drivers Warned Of “Consequences” Of Not Racing In Saudi Arabia

BBC Sport made the following claim

“BBC Sport has learned that a significant number of drivers had concerns about the safety of the event following the attack”

“But eventually they were convinced to go ahead and race after being given further information by bosses”

“Part of this information involved the possible consequences of not racing, such as how easily teams and drivers would be able to leave the country if the race did not happen”

It is worth remembering that in 2019, about 175 WWE personnel were stuck on a grounded aircraft for 6 hours as a consequence of expressing some concerns about wrestling in Saudi Arabia

Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel, who was sidelined because of a positive covid test analyzed this situation with DPA

“How independent can you be when you are on the payroll? You could say boycott, don’t even go there”

“The question is how brave you can be when you are a paid guest”

“It’s not like Formula 1 chooses that on the map. It’s more that countries are approaching Formula 1 and it’s part of the business model that venues are putting a lot of money into it”

“Do you dare to do something about it when you are there?”

Defending world champion Max Verstappen “had a lot of fun battling with Charles again”

“I really enjoyed it and it’s not easy to get past him, patience is always key, especially if you want to fight for the Championship”

His teammate Sergio Perez feels that “when you don’t have the right luck you cannot win the race, especially on crazy tracks like this”

“It could have been a one, two but unfortunately, we didn’t get it”

Championship leader Charles Leclerc hopes “it stays this close for the coming races. It’s exciting to watch and to drive like this”

Teammate Carlos Sainz “can’t wait to go to Australia after two years without racing there”

Their team principal Mattia Binotto stated that “I’m sorry, but if Carlos didn’t slow down [in the pits], he lands on Max” [Autosprint]

“I don’t know how they didn’t penalise him”

“Sainz [too] didn't get his position back immediately after he was blocked on re-entering the track”

Lewis Hamilton has revealed that he “couldn’t keep up with the Haas” [Sky Sports]

“The power they had, we’ve got a lot of work to do for sure”

Alpine’s Fernando Alonso thinks that “the battle with Esteban on track was fair, we always respect one another out there”

“We had some close fights in Bahrain too and always try to do the best for the team”

Should Perez and Sainz have been swapped before the safety car restart?
