100 Yards From a Tornado?!

On August 27th, 2021 I witnessed 5 tornadoes in northern Iowa on just one storm. With two of these, I was able to get very close to, with the first one getting literally within 100 feet of the main vortex. Some disclaimers with this - the first one being that you shouldn’t ever get this close...almost ever. I had some good situational awareness to note the track of the tornado and understanding how weak it was when it was passing by BUT regardless of this info you never know what will happen. I was kind of stuck in this situation due to 3 reasons. 1. I had just lost my camera and my mind was freakin out about where it was. 2. There was a line of chasers directly behind me so my west option was blocked. 3. As previously noted, the tornado was relatively weak as it was coming by so the urgency to move was displaced a bit. So I just decided to enjoy the moment as you’ll see haha.

The second intercept was a bit more dramatic visually speaking - okay a lot more dramatic with this being one of the best tornado crossing shots I’ve taken besides the Dalton/Ashby EF4.. So thankful that my camera was able to focus just before it crossed the road in front of me, making the shot that more intense!
