1980. What a year for Fats. At 52 he's more popular than ever. The year before he was back at the studio and releases one of his best studio albums "Sleeping On The Job"(USA: "1980"). But is wasn't all that "rosy" as we shall see.
A short overview from the year 1980 'till this performance:
January 30: The year starts disasterous for all fans of New orleans related music: Professor Longhair (Roy Byrd) dies;
early April: Charles Levy, Fats' attorney dies at the age of 64. He was Fats attorney for almost thirty years. Everyone, including Rosemary, knew he was screwing Fats out of money. Fats never seen it until recently;
April 26: Fats plays at Jazz & Heritage Festival;
May 1980: A new record is released: "If I Get Rich/My Old Time Used To Be".
June 5: Another blow...Robert "Buddy" Hagans dies of prostate cancer. Hagans retired after a terrible accident late '60's. He played with Fats from the early beginnings;
June 30; Fats records "Whiskey Heaven", for the upcoming soundtrack to "Any Which Way You Can" starring Clint Eastwood (must see!). The song will be Fats last charting record (Billboard Country Charts, reaching #51);
July 4: Fats starts a three week European tour. He is the highest paid act in Europe.
