Partially abandoned ghost town (slide show) - Kaskaskia, Illinois, USA

The original "gateway to the west" and the first capital of Illinois, this town once boasted a population of over 7000, but now it is on the wrong side of the river and the population is more like 20. The bridge you see at the beginning and end is where the river used to be, and still marks the boundary with Missouri.

There are actually two "population centers" of this town, a mile and a half from each other. so what you are seeing is first the outlying part, then we go to what you might call the downtown, and then we see more of the outlying part on the way back out to Missouri. Unfortunately my videocamera was broken when I passed thru here, so I had to use still photos instead.
