questing for a mysterious abandoned ghost town - urban exploration

A hunt for the site of a secluded ghost town alongside an abandoned railroad track.

First i went into the historical society of the nearest populated town, only five miles away, and none of the nice people there had any idea that this place ever even existed.

But, on the wall of their museum was an old map of their town, and on the edges of each road that extended off the edge of their map, were arrows identifying the place that each of the roads led to. We found that their map did identify this place in that indistinct way.

Their map also provided another tidbit of evidence, describing this place as consisting of "a station house and crew housing," which they explained meant that it must have been a logging town. The station house would have been the home of the boss, in charge of the workers and of arranging the shipments, while the workers would have lived in the crew houses.

So they took some time to show me some of the equipment that would have been used in the logging enterprise, how the timber was felled and shaved and readied for loading onto the trains.

One of the nice gentlemen had actually done some logging back in the day, and he described to me how the bulk of the job seekers (and there were many, during the depression) would actually come and go on the trains, even though the trains had no accommodations for passengers.

Ever thankful for their insights, I went to see what could be seen.

btw the reason I don't tell the world the location of this place is to protect this place from the world.

notes:

02:47 - I knew going in that the road and railroad track are parallel the whole way. before I began, I was expecting the road to be so overgrown that I would have to walk down the railroad track, but this discovery nixxed that notion. The train extends down the direction we are going and the empty track is the direction we came from.

03:30 - to the left as you approach is the other end of the train you saw earlier. to the right, the direction we are going, is another section of train.

04:58 - maybe evidence of an ATV accident (someone commented that it looks like logging gear)

07:20 - a frog living in pollution

07:36 - most of these are pull-tabs, with a few early stay-tabs mixed in, so this stuff is from around 1980

11:15 - the shadowy square in the middle of this debris is a door frame to a stairway leading down to a basement

12:48 - this can was opened with one of those old time can openers which doesn't have a knob to turn; its just a hooked blade on a stick

13:17 - i was about to say "this looks like it was the roof of a building," but then i find the nail, which to me looks like a certain type of nail used for roofing.

14:28 - if this was a gate in a fence, it seems unusual for the gate to be right next to the corner of the fence like this. it makes me think the town's buildings may have been close together and "cozy," maybe without any room for cars to get around. maybe pedestrians only?

14:58 - cast iron lid of a gas lamp, or maybe base of a table lamp?

15:54 - an old hunting shack - old by standard definition, but much more recent than the logging town

18:10 - the atlantic & western railroad owned a few dozen miles of track in north carolina. the company was incorporated in 1899 and remained in business until 1927
