Transitions in vinyasa: Make them more graceful with reversibility!
Make your transitions in vinyasa smoother, lighter and more graceful, with less impact, using the concept of reversibility.
The term reversibility comes from Moshe Feldenkrais and refers to the ability to change direction at any point in a movement. This requires you to be able to maintain your center of gravity over your base of support while in motion, even while shifting from one base of support to another. Otherwise, you're falling, and when that happens, momentum has taken over and you no longer have a choice about how you're moving.
This is such a fundamental concept in movement and motor control, I often begin yoga anatomy trainings talking about balance and equilibrium. But because it's so fundamental to the way we move, it's easy to overlook.
Graceful transitions in sun salutations, such as jumping back to chaturanga, are often described as "flying" or "floating," which I think is an un-helpful way of thinking about them. You can’t really fly or float (without technology or water, of course). You have to be in contact with the ground to move with control. The concept of reversibility can help you feel how to use ground reaction forces to support your center of gravity to make your landings lighter and softer.
Let me know if it's helpful! Thanks for watching!
