‘Inflammatory’ US election reporting by the ABC may breach editorial code

The ABC’s inaccurate and inflammatory reporting on Donald Trump’s Supreme Court challenge may have breached its editorial policies, according to Sky News Digital Editor Jack Houghton.

Aunty's star breakfast presenter Michael Rowland reported that the court challenge was a “truly disturbing” and “truly terrifying moment for America's democracy”.

Mr Houghton said the comments appear to be a breach of editorial policies at the ABC which require reports not to use emotive, hyperbolic, or inflammatory language.

“Now the ABC’s reporting on this matter is not only inaccurate – it is perpetuating the notion that the system is broken, that people should panic, that people have no other recourse than protest,” he said.

“It is dangerous, and considering their chief complaints against Donald Trump’s rhetoric, it is incredibly hypocritical.

“But will those on the left be holding their own to account? We very much doubt it.”
