Welcome to Tulum! This is our best advice for spending one full day in Tulum - what to do, and what NOT to do. We’ve been paying attention to all of the craze Tulum has been part of recently, and we wanted to check out what it was all about. We started our afternoon by visiting Roraima burger, a small shop in downtown Tulum, and it was incredible! We recommend the plantain fries :)
After lunch, we caught a taxi to our first cenote of the day - Dos Ojos. Full transparency, rent a car, do NOT go the taxi route. We spent around 300 pesos ($15 USD) to get to the cenote, but then had no way to get back (thanks to Jack and Megan for giving us a ride!)
If you’re visiting Dos Ojos and going by taxi, make sure you have your driver take you all the way to the entrance of the cenote, not just the ticket booth! If you don’t get a ride the entire way, it’s an extra 1.5 mile walk on a dirt road. To go the extra mile and a half, we paid 50 pesos ($2.50). Dos Ojos is incredible! It’s 2 cave cenotes connected by an underwater canal. You can scuba dive between the 2, very cool! After spending a lot of time between the 2 ojos (eyes), we wanted to visit cenote Nicte-Ha, because we had heard good things, but had no idea how to get there. Thankfully, a very nice man offered to take us (once again, rent a car).
Nicte-Ha is very different from Dos Ojos. It’s not contained by a cave system, and has a TON of vegetation and fish. This cenote requires a snorkel to really appreciate it! You can rent a snorkel or bring your own, we recommend bringing your own!
After the cenotes, we decided to check out the more ‘instagrammable’ side of Tulum. We’ve been in Isla Mujeres, Holbox, and Valladolid before coming to Tulum, so it was a bit of a shock, to say the least. Tulum is beautiful and trendy, and with that comes high prices and less of the authentic ‘Mexico’ feel.
We had an incredible dinner at Burrito Amor, and we definitely recommend it!
