Downhill. It's all downhill. Anything you want to do, like fishing or swimming, is downhill. There is not much that will keep Gary from fishing, but a steep downhill trek to a fishing dock did squash his fishing plans here at Deerlick Creek Campground. What really sealed the deal was a young mom and her two sons huffing and puffing as they climbed up the fishing trail that was right near our camp. Although it is only one tenth of a mile, it is indeed steep. Steep, but doable.
What we love about Deerlick Creek Campground:
1. Scenic, wooded, hilly area
2. Large ample sites, many with wooded "balconies" overlooking the woods or the water
3. Nature trail with tree identification signs, primarily flat, paved
4. Wooded trails - doable
5. Scenic park roads, plenty of roads for walking, jogging, biking, dog walking
6. Wildlife - We saw deer, always a fun thing for our two dogs.
7. Verizon service worked.
8. Gate attendant and closed gates at night - This may not seem like a big deal but many campgrounds are wide open with vehicles driving in and out at will.
Here are some things to be aware of...
1. If you plan on fishing, it's a steep downhill to get to the fishing peers that are at Deerlick Creek.
2. If you plan on swimming, the trail from the campground is closed and the bridge at the swimming area is taped off( at the time of our visit in June, 2021). You'll need to drive to the swim beach area.
3. If you plan to visit the swim beach, have all your snacks, water, and supplies with you because it is a walk downhill and then along a flat trail to get to the beach. There is a little uphill beyond the swim area to get to the picnic area and grills.
All in all, this is another amazing Army Corps of Engineers Park.
