‘A lot on the table’: US shutdown ‘looming’ after Mike Johnson’s election

Howard University Assistant Professor Dr Niambi Carter says a US government shutdown is “looming” for November 18 because of a continuing resolution.

“There is a lot on the table here, so finally, the Speaker of the House can get back to conducting business,” Dr Carter said.

This comes as Republican Mike Johnson was appointed as the new US House of Representatives speaker after weeks of party infighting.

Dr Carter has described the new Speaker as “very conservative” as he was not “keen” on certifying the 2020 election.

“It is yet to be seen how he will govern now that he has the gavel.”
