How to Install Apps Directly on SD Card on Android & Move (Best Method)

Installing and moving apps to an SD card on an Android phone can free up internal storage and improve device performance, using settings, adoptable storage, or third-party apps depending on your device and Android version

Step 1 — Check Your Device and SD Card Compatibility
Not all Android devices support moving apps to an SD card

Before proceeding:
Ensure your phone has an SD card slot and supports expandable storage.
Choose a high-speed SD card (Class 10 or UHS/U1+) for better performance.
Back up important data as formatting may erase content on the card

Step 2 — Format Your SD Card
Insert the SD card into your Android device.
Open Settings Storage.

Tap your SD card and select Format or Format as internal storage (adoptable storage)

Confirm to format; adoptable storage makes the SD card part of your internal memory, allowing apps to be installed directly to it.

Step 3 — Move Existing Apps to the SD Card
Open Settings Apps & Notifications See all apps (or Applications).
Select the app you want to move.

Tap Storage & Cache Change SD Card.
Tap Move to transfer the app (process may take a few minutes)

Note: Some apps, especially pre-installed or system apps, cannot be moved to the SD card

Step 4 — Install Apps Directly to the SD Card
For devices supporting adoptable storage:

Ensure your SD card is formatted as internal storage.
Open Settings Applications or Storage settings.
Set the Default installation location or App installation location to SD Card

Apps downloaded from the Play Store will now install to your SD card automatically.
