5 Drawbacks to a Career in Academia

1. It can be difficult to find a tenure-track position. Less than one-third of all current academic positions in the United States are tenure-track positions.

2. There are limited opportunities for upward mobility in Academia relative to industries.

3. You have to deal with a lot of bureaucracy. You will be dealing with everybody from department chairs to Dean's to departmental and university committees to institutional review boards that are at your University.

4. There are social cliques. These cliques are transgenerational. There are times when things can become petty and it can affect getting published in a journal for example. The currency of academia is publications and grants in many ways. If these guys have been there forever before you came in, they already have these power positions. Obviously, it can be harder to get your hands on some of that currency if you don't play the game.

5. You have an illusion of flexibility that doesn't match with reality. Flexibility as an academic is something that a lot of people talk about. They say this is great! You can set your own hours. Flexible doesn't necessarily mean you can do anything you want whenever you want. In fact, it can often just mean that your hours never stop
