---- Why won't industry managers hire PhDs? ----
As a career mentor, I spend a lot of time speaking with industry managers, asking them if the scientists and engineers they hire are well prepared for their careers.
Many say "No, the scientists in particular, are not well prepared for industry. Especially the PhDs."
Some say: "I won't hire another PhD."
One said: "90% of PhDs are worthless."
I wanted to know why this person felt this way, so I asked for more detail. Here’s what I was told:
1. They think they’re smarter than everyone
2. They find fault with everything and everyone
3. They just want to keep analyzing rather than make a decision and move forward
I've heard this before. Managers want scientists skills in their employees, but they also want them to work well on a team.
If you want to be the kind of PhD that your manager will reward, rather than the kind that frustrates their manager, follow these guidelines:
1. Be effective, not smart
2. Find solutions, not faults
3. Be decisive, not perfect
Industry doesn’t want scholars. They want solutions. They want you to be able to make hard decisions, and make decisions faster. Make sure you are part of the solution, and you won’t have your manager complaining that PhDs are worthless.
