Dr. Melissa McHale, M.D., is a Gynecologic Surgeon and Endometriosis Excision Specialist. She has performed over 300 complex excision of endometriosis cases and she has extensive experience with sacral neuromodulator implants, transvaginal ultrasound diagnostics, and the management of pain and fertility in endometriosis patients. Dr. McHale completed her OB/GYN residency at Johns Hopkins before completing a two-year fellowship with Dr. Andrea Vidali, a world-renowned surgeon specializing in endometriosis, miscarriage, and reproductive immunology at Braverman Reproductive Immunology and Endometriosis Surgery.

 I'm Dr. Melissa McHale. I'm an endometriosis excision surgeon in Washington, DC, with PRM. I was recently asked at what stage of endometriosis is surgery required. This is a trick question because endometriosis is surgically staged. You can't be assigned a stage of endometriosis without having surgery.

And the real answer is there isn't one. At whatever stage you are, your symptoms are what determine whether or not you need surgery. There's no correlation between symptoms and stage of endometriosis. And so the decision to have surgery should be one that you make with your doctor really based on how endometriosis symptoms are affecting your life.

So there is no stage at which you, you know, you're too low of a stage to need surgery or something like that. No. It's really about how you experience endo rather than the stage.
