Dissociation happens when your mind is so overwhelmed that it “checks out”
Dissociation may occur when you are in physical pain, the current situation is too overwhelming to cope with or you are reminded of a prior trauma
Dissociation is different from daydreaming or “highway hypnosis”
Symptoms
Have an out-of-body experience
Feel emotionally numb or detached
Feel little or no pain
Have an altered sense of time “spacing out”
Emotional or physical distress (lack of safety)  dissociation
(An) Intervention: Begin creating safety
Keep a log of what was going on before you dissociated.
Explore why that moment was overwhelming to you (knowing is half of the battle)
Take steps to make that situation less threatening in the future
