Connected Speech Level 1 Becky–Pitch: Focus

Pitch change occurs on the most important word in a phrase or sentence. This word is called the focus word, or the key word. The voice usually rises on the stressed syllable of the focus word, and the vowel is long, strong, and clear. Listen for the focus word. Then identify the stressed syllable in the focus word.

Connected Speech is a pronunciation program that focuses on the suprasegmentals - pause groups, pitch change, word and sentence stress, linking, syllables and the IPA. This software helps learners apply theory to speaking and understanding natural English. The learner uses auditory and visual perception to detect and predict features of spoken English, and the interactivity gives immediate feedback. It uses a recorder embedded in the software for the learner to pronounce sentences in connected speech.
