Escort Carriers in Action - Windham Bay USS Makin Island Typhoon Connie Okinawa FM-2 TBM F4U

Navy footage depicts World War II action aboard the escort carriers USS Windham Bay and USS Makin Island.
Escort carriers functioned as combat escorts for convoys, participated in task forces, and sometimes served as replenishment sources when fleet carriers lost aircraft.
Windham Bay was part of a Pacific naval force that encountered Typhoon Connie, sometimes called Typhoon Viper, southeast of Okinawa in June 1945. Dark footage shows aircraft battered on deck. Other film clips depict the bow of the cruiser USS Pittsburgh floating detached in the water after the typhoon passed; the cruiser limped to port and was eventually rebuilt. Some of the damaged observation aircraft are said to be aboard USS Massachusetts.
Action aboard USS Makin Island shows the arming of aircraft for combat strikes. Since photo slates are not included in this film package, dates are not available. But the action could be during the battle for Iwo Jima beginning in February 1945, or Okinawa from late March to early June.
