USS Ticonderoga CV-14 Kamikaze Damage - Kodachrome Color Film

Crisp Kodachrome motion picture film labeled 1945 shows activity on an aircraft carrier flight deck identified as the USS Ticonderoga (CV-14) as damaged F6F Hellcat fighters are jettisoned. The ship's island structure shows fire and blast damage. Ticonderoga was struck by two kamikazes on January 21, 1945. A raging deck fire ensued. The ship's captain, Dixie Kiefer, adroitly ordered flooding of compartments to induce a list that caused gasoline to roll off the deck, lessening the fire. He also maneuvered Ticonderoga on a course that diminished wind feeding the flames. The second of the kamikazes injured Kiefer, breaking his arm and striking him with shrapnel.
This film reel continues with views of ships at sea, showing dazzle camouflage on some. Later footage on this mixed reel includes landing scenes of Army troops in Duck amphibious transports on maneuvers at Maui, Hawaii. The last sequence shows a Navy PBM Mariner flying boat being fueled from a seaplane tender, location unknown.
