Forgotten Places on the River Ayr

The Haugh village had four water powered mills and the water came via a lade that was cut through the soft sandstone in tunnels and ditches. The lade cut through the Kingencleugh Glen and the water from the burn was also diverted through the lade. A cistern at the junction of the burn and lade had steps cut to allow people to bathe here and locals named it 'Robert Burns Bath' as he used it on hot days together with the mill workers and staff from Kingencleugh House.

It is now full of sediment and the dam has burst so it is a shadow of its former self.
