Bark Burrs or Burls on Various Tree Species
Burrs or burls look like cancerous growths on tree bark. They are valuable for veneers and wood turning. They are found on most tree species and cause no harm. The size is very variable, as is the shape and appearance. Sometimes large numbers of dormant buds are found within them. They are also found on roots. They are caused by physical trauma, bacteria, viruses, fungi, insect attack, etc. Witches broom growths on birch trees have a lot in common with burrs.
