Pirate Ship Tiny House & Muriwai Gannet Colony | Auckland, New Zealand

Muriwai is a black-sand surf beach located on the west coast of Auckland region. It's also home to a gannet colony (one of three places in New Zealand where you can visit them up close). The gannets are usually in residence at Muriwai Beach from August to March each year.

First stop of the day for us though was at a popular handmade pie shop in Kumeu aptly named "The Pie Shop". When there's a line out the door for some pies you know it's got to be good! The custard tart was a great treat too.

The gannet colony can be found along a walking trail between Muriwai and Maukatia (Maori Bay). There are a couple of viewing platforms to see the birds from and it's a nice visit to both beaches. Do beware of the strong currents and waves at these two west coast NZ beaches though as they can be potentially quite dangerous especially if you're not a strong swimmer.

After staying in a yellow submarine a few weeks back, Peter was on the hunt for other cool tiny homes to stay in and that's how he came across a pirate ship in Auckland! The pirate ship Airbnb is located a short drive from Muriwai (in Waimauku) and it's basically a brilliant treehouse. The bathroom/toilet and kitchen facilities are in separate buildings and are communal spaces but you get to have the pirate ship all to yourself to enjoy :)
