Tamales, Nihotupu Dam + Bethells Beach | WEST AUCKLAND, NZ

West Auckland is home to some of the most stunning scenery in the entire Auckland region as it's where you'll find the Waitakere Ranges, waterfalls and beautiful, wild, black sand beaches.

We spent an entire day out in West Auckland and this is what we got up to!

First up we visited The Shed Collective, specifically so we could try some tamales for the first time. Peter was incredibly excited to come across Nanita's Tamales in his search for where to get tamales in New Zealand.

The Shed Collective is a weekly plant-based market that spotlights local produce and has a healthy selection of vegetarian/vegan-friendly products. It's also where Nanita has her tamales food stall every Saturday.

The Shed Collective
Address: 99 Parrs Cross Road, Henderson, Auckland 0612
Hours: 9am–1pm every Saturday

Nanita is very warm, friendly and hardworking. She's native Mexican and you can absolutely see her passion for Mexican cooking and culture through her food. If you get in touch with Nanita via Facebook Messenger or by texting her on Whatsapp, you can pre-order chicken, beef or pork tamales too. The ingredients she uses are local, organic and free range and her tamales are made with sustainability and love as Nanita says.

Right next to the market is an antiques and collectibles store called Just Plane Interesting. They have two shops with the other being along the roadside before you go down the drive to the market. Just Plane Interesting is full of strange and wonderful things! The perfect place to spend some time treasure hunting.

Our next stop was Upper Nihotupu Falls and Dam. A great walking track which begins with some native bush before joining to normal paths. It's a very nice and easy-going stroll where you pass a few waterfalls before arriving at the impressive dam structure itself.

We then made our way over to Bethells Beach to catch the sunset, a stunning black sand beach that was particularly magical with the sun going down. On the way to Bethells Beach there are some giant sand dunes which unfortunately we didn't get the chance to visit during this vlog but hopefully in a future vlog!
