Jewel of the Hauraki Gulf - KAWAU ISLAND | New Zealand

Kawau Island is one of the largest islands in the Hauraki Gulf, located north of Auckland. It's a peaceful and quiet island, great for a day trip.

To get there we took a boat ride from Sandspit Wharf (near Warkworth) which is about an hour's drive from Auckland city. We bought our tickets in the morning from the ticket office there.

The boat ride is about an hour including a few stops around the island as we were on the royal mail run so mail was getting delivered to locals along the way.

We did the Mansion House Cruise and hopped off at Mansion House Bay which is where we also got picked up back from.

There's a small entry fee of $4 per adult if you want to look inside Mansion House, but just be sure to check their opening hours before visiting so you can best plan your timing:

Although there is accommodation on Kawau Island itself, we booked an Airbnb which was a private cabin in peaceful Paparoa. The place is set in a tranquil garden with beautiful willow trees in rural NZ. Our host Kathy was very warm, welcoming and friendly. The cabin is separated from her main home and has its own parking spot too.
