Tesla’s Plan B for The Cybertruck Pickup Truck

Elon Musk says if Tesla Cybertruck fails Tesla will have a Plan B for the Cybertruck. He detailed a little more about Cybertruck's fallback plan, which I think is so interesting that it could be a separate Cybertruck B idea for those people who don't like the innovative design of the Cybertruck.

During a recent interview with Automotive News, Elon Musk stated that Tesla was prepared to deal with slumping sales when the Cybertruck is released in late 2021. There is a possibility that the company’s first pickup will not do well, and Musk said that Tesla would adapt.

“If it turns out nobody wants to buy a weird-looking truck, we’ll build a normal truck, no problem,” the Tesla CEO said on the Daily Drive Podcast. “There are lots of normal trucks out there that look pretty much the same. You can hardly tell the difference. And sure, we could just do some copycat truck. That’s easy. So that’s our fallback strategy.”

Design aside, Tesla is looking to make the Cybertruck a leader in the pickup segment for functionality and performance.

Musk added, "We’re really, fundamentally making this truck as a North American ass-kicker, basically. The goal is to kick the most amount of ass possible with this truck. We want it to be something you could use to tow a boat, a horse trailer, pull tree stumps out of the ground, go off-roading and you don’t have to worry about scratching the paint because there is no paint. You could just be smashing boulders and be fine."

Production of the Cybertruck is meant to start next year, and we now know where Tesla plans to build it. During the automaker's Q2 earning's call, the carmaker said it chose Austin, Texas as the home for a new Gigafactory to build the electric truck.

From everything I've seen and read, Cybertruck is a fantastic vehicle. And it looks good, too. Different for sure, but beautiful in its Euclidean form, and its masterfully engineered minimalism.

Regarding Cybertruck’s timing and stainless steel, it seems to me that late 2021 still sounds realistic. People, living in cold places, say, the main thing that puts vehicles to an early grave is road salt. The stainless steel construction is the truck's best feature from my standpoint. Being able to beat up on sports cars at the strip is a bonus.

Regarding Cybertruck’s controversial design, wait a few years and you'll see other trucks adopt a triangular silhouette and super-squinty eyes and almost no taillights, etc. This happens every time a bold design comes to market. Others are forced to gravitate that way.
