Adding a push button matrix to HT16K33 led display modules (featuring the TinyPICO)

Adafruit sell a number of LED displays which use the Holtek HT16K33 LED driver and which can be controlled via an I2C interface. In addition to driving up to 16x8 LEDs, this IC is capable of key-scanning a push button matrix up to 3x13 in size. In this video I show how to modify one of these LED display modules so it can be used to read which button is pressed on a 3x4 numeric keypad. A microcontroller uses the same I2C interface to read key presses as well as to output to the LED display. This is particularly useful when GPIO is in short supply.
