PART C - Paul William's Novel "Apple Bay", 1975 [abridged version]
This audio is my personally recorded abridged version of Paul William's classic 70's novel, "Apple Bay, or life on the planet", published in 1975. This is the definitive hippie memoir, written by the LSD-philosopher-hippie Paul Williams, who also wrote "Das Energi".
Synopsis on the back of the book: "Apple Bay is the story of a group of young people who left the city to try to live together in a wilderness commune."
I highly recommend absorbing this classic story told in an intense, dreamy LSD-soaked style that could only have been written by somebody who lived through it. The book covers many issues from the 60's psychedelic era (and includes many examples of using psychedelic substances), including environmental derision, coming together, living in communes, and a beautiful LSD-driven philosophy. Paul is constantly asking throughout the novel, "What are we here for, anyway? Are we here to sell soap? What is all this aimed at?", and inevitably leaves one with an endearingly optimistic and forward-reaching outlook on humankind and life. Often quite dramatic and intense, the book is ultimately a perfect picture of how far sticking to one's principles and 'going all the way with self-reliance' can go.
-------------- "I am no cell, but the spark that leaps. I am the synapse that jumps between minds. I am thought itself, not flesh but energy. I am."
---------"...but living in the woods is not where its at. Where its at is living on the planet. I came to the woods because I wanted live on the planet. Not in a Nation. Not in a state of mind. On the planet, in the biosphere, right here where everything's happening, where I can't cop out on my responsibilities as God by playing with my erector set."
--------------"The planet is where we all live, not just some of us; and that's why it's so difficult to live here."
