The Weeknd and KISS - Blinding Detroit Rock City Lights
For years The Weeknd toyed with the idea of bringing back the death disc. Also known as "splatter platters," teen tragedies like Jan and Dean’s “Dead Man’s Curve,” “Leader of the Pack” by The Shangri-Las, and the terrific “Nightmare” by The Whyte Boots were a staple of late '50s/early '60s pop radio before dying out with the British Invasion. When The Weeknd had a chance encounter with KISS singer Paul Stanley at Heathrow's Virgin VIP lounge, he found an eager co-conspirator in reviving the genre. Though Gene Simmons was not immediately on board, he quickly changed his mind when Kiss was offered the rights to “Blinding Detroit Rock City Lights” action figures. Despite dark themes of violent automobile crashes and death, the single spent four weeks at the top of Billboard’s Hot 100. Surprisingly, neither the hit song nor the LP, "Lick It Up, Starboy," received any Grammy nominations.
