Cambodia and Vietnam

I absolutely loved traveling through Cambodia and Vietnam. I don’t know if it was just a matter of where my head was at that time in my life or if there is just something special about that part of the world. I have no doubt that it’s both. The delicious and flavorful food choices, taking inspiration from international influences; the people so kind with a difficult history a mere generation behind them; amazing historic landscapes… I loved being there and I found myself looking inward regularly in contrast to how they and I live our lives.

This particular trip (link below) arrived in Bangkok and travelled over the border into Cambodia soon after. Make your own plans and maybe arrive early if you want to see Bangkok as the tour does not have anything planned there. We then spent a couple days in Siem Reap to see the Angkor complex and sunrise over Angkor Wat before heading to Phnom Penh. I can only understate the impact seeing the killing fields and learning about the Khmer Rouge affects you. It’s heartbreaking and another reason to visit this evolving nation.

Vietnam is a fantastic country to visit. The food was amazing. The cities are lively and buzzing with scooters and horns chirping. It’s incredible to be immersed in the streets where the expectation is that you are going to be in the way. Don’t stop, just be predictable. Cross the street as if traffic is flowing water passing you by. Takes getting used to. The Vietnam portion of the tour started in Ho Chi Minh City (Formerly Saigon), although not much time is spent there so plan your free time. We booked a motorbike food tour for our free time and it was exceptional! The tour took us through the Mekong Delta, Hoi An (You’re going to love this little town! Get yourself a tailored suit in 24 hours like I did and see the lanterns at night), the historic town of Hue, up to the big city of Hanoi, and finally out to Ha Long Bay where you eat and drink well on a boat for an afternoon, spending the night on the water.

This tour was in 2017 with Intrepid Travel. You should definitely check them out (once this f#*-ing virus is out of the way). Here’s the trip:
