Omsk is the capital of Omsk Oblast and is the second largest city in Russia east of the Ural Mountains. As a stop on the Trans-Siberian it is an essential transport hub for Siberia. Omsk was founded in 1716 as a fortress on the Imperial Russia's expanding southern frontier and by the 1850s it became the capital of Western Siberia. Today Omsk has over 1 million people and is the 8th biggest city in Russia.
