An Englishman in Yekaterinburg (Англичанин в Екатеринбурге)

This is number 13: The city of Ekaterinburg in Sverdlovsk Oblast

Yekaterinburg is the 4th most populous city in Russia after Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and Novosibirsk. 

 The city was founded in 1723 by the order of Peter the Great as a metallurgical factory and was named after the wife of Peter the Great, Yekaterina.

It is the capital of Sverdlovsk Oblast, named after the old name for the city Sverdlovsk. Like Saint Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast.

It is the main cultural and industrial centre of the oblast and has been dubbed the "third capital of Russia", as it is ranked third by the size of economy, culture, transportation and tourism.

In 1781 Yekaterinburg became a key city to Siberia, which had rich resources, and was known as the "window to Asia”.

In modern history, Ekaterinburg is famous for being the city in which  last czar family was imprisoned, and later executed.
