In the Driver's Seat: Stories from the Cab in Vancouver
In the Driver’s Seat: Stories From the Cab with Helen Potrebenko, Larry Claypool, Pav Nagra, Keith McKellar and Penny Goldsmith.
Presented at Indian Summer Festival in Vancouver in July 2015.
Taxi drivers don’t get to decide who steps into their cars. In a working day, they see a larger cross section of humanity than most – drunk teenagers, twitchy businessmen, fighting couples, and chatty trios. Some cab drivers see enough colourful characters over the course of their working lives that their conversations would offer enough material to fill a book. And in some cases, they write those books.
With “In the Drivers’ Seat,” Indian Summer Festival invited a group of writers who are linked by the fact that they once drove (or still drive) taxis. Whereas the interaction between driver and passenger usually happens through a reflection in a sliver of glass, this is a chance to get to know the lives and work of a group of keenly observant and gifted storytellers. Featuring Vancouverites Helen Potrebenko, Larry Claypool, Pav Nagra, Keith McKellar and a reading by publisher Penny Goldsmith (Lazara Press), this panel looks at the taxi cab as a place where solitude meets socialization, and through which each of the speakers navigates, understands and grapples with the city.
This event was made possible with the support of the BC Arts Council, The Tyee, and SFU Woodward’s.
