"SNOW GOOD!" NYS&W SU99 Plows and removes trees on Norfolk Southern's Hudson Secondary

On March 1, 2010 New York, Susquehanna & Western's SU99 finally was on a roll again after spending over three days in Vernon, New Jersey due to the massive heavy wet snowfall the struck Orange County, New York. Well over thirty inches was recorded in most areas and fell in just over 24 hours downing trees everywhere and cutting off power. NJT opened the Port Jervis Line on Sunday night, thus giving the SU99 the go ahead. They encountered problems of their own on their railroad striking a large tree and damaging the grab iron on Thursday during the height of the storm. On Monday it should be smooth sailing, right? WRONG! Norfolk Southern never sent anyone out onto the Hudson Secondary. Although the snow was not as deep due to warm temperatures, trees were down along the line. The first one being north of Warwick. Although it was pushed aside by the locomotives, the train soon went in emergency. They knew what had happened. The tree must have struck a cut lever and effectively broke the train in two. Sure enough, the last car was cut away from the rest of the train. They almost made it. Soon NS personnel showed up to ride on the train to chain saw any remaining trees. The train was left behind and the four locomotives rolled toward Hudson Jct. clearing a path. Shots between Wisner Road and Sugarloaf, then I had to leave.
