British Soldiers in Rhode Island, 1776-79 -A Lecture by Don Hagist- Part 1: Occupation

A few weeks ago, I attended a lecture by Revolutionary War historian Don Hagist, who is something of a household name in the reenacting community. Don has written extensively about the British Army in North America during the War of Independence. His lecture was specifically about the British regiments who were garrisoned in Rhode Island from the winter of 1776 to the fall of 1779. The lecture covered a wide range of topics, including key events that occurred during the occupation of Rhode Island, as well as some basic information about who these soldiers were, as people: from how old they were, to what trades they practiced. It also cleared up several misconceptions that people have about the conduct of the British army during the war.

As mentioned previously, Don has written a number of books on the subject, most notably "British Soldiers, American War": https://www.amazon.com/British-Soldiers-American-War-Revolution/dp/1594162042

He also has a blog in which he writes about the experiences of individual soldiers: www.redcoat76.blogspot.com

And, as well, he writes articles for the Journal of the American Revolution: www.allthingsliberty.com

The lecture will be uploaded in parts over the course of the next few days. Enjoy!
