Schmincke Liquid Charcoal vs Regular Watercolour - What's the Difference?
Join me on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CandiceSmallArt
In this video, I’m demonstrating Schmincke Liquid Charcoal and showing how it behaves in watercolour painting. I take you through the texture, consistency, and tonal range straight from the tube and with added water, and show how it diffuses, granulates, and layers on cold-pressed paper.
I’ll demonstrate:
What liquid charcoal looks like straight from the tube
How it changes with added water
Its grainy, granulating texture when dry
Using it wet-in-wet for atmospheric effects
Building light and dark values
Scraping through with a palette knife for tree textures
Mixing liquid charcoal with other watercolours
Using it as an alternative to lamp black or Payne’s grey
Adding white gouache highlights over the top
I also share finished examples, including paintings made entirely with liquid charcoal, and show how it can be used both as a base layer and mixed into other colours to create rich, moody darks. The grape seed black has a subtle bluish tone that separates beautifully and adds atmosphere to landscapes.
If you enjoy expressive, atmospheric watercolour techniques and like letting the paint flow and surprise you, liquid charcoal is definitely worth exploring.
Thank you so much for watching — I hope you find this demonstration useful and inspiring. See you in the next video!
