15 Mins Loose Seascape Watercolour | Simple Technique, Beautiful Results
In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to paint a very loose and expressive seascape in 15 minutes and using just three colours. This is all about letting go, working quickly, and allowing the paint and water to do the work for you.
If you would like to see more watercolour landscape tutorials, you can join me over on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CandiceSmallArt
We’ll be using large brushes, bold strokes, and minimal detail to create movement and atmosphere, focusing on looseness, speed, and spontaneity rather than precision. You’ll see how a limited palette can still create rich, vibrant colour and depth throughout the painting.
Starting with a soft, fluid sky, we’ll use water, tilting, and spraying techniques to encourage natural blending and beautiful textures. From there, we’ll build up the sea and shoreline using layering, dry brushing, and expressive marks, leaving areas of white paper to suggest light and surf.
In the foreground, we’ll add depth and contrast with darker tones, using tools like a palette knife, tissue lifting, and spatter techniques to create texture and interest without overworking the piece.
This is a fun, freeing approach to watercolour that’s perfect if you’re looking to:
Loosen up your painting style
Work more quickly and confidently
Explore expressive techniques with fewer colours
Materials:
Paints - Rose Madder, Azure Blue and Raw Sienna
Brushes - 3/4" Mop (Aqua Elite), 8 Mop, 12 Round
Paper - Arches Cold Press, 300gsm 20cm x 26cm
Tissues, Spray Bottle and Palette Knife
Whether you’re a beginner or more experienced, this tutorial is a great way to experiment and enjoy the process.
If you give it a try, I’d love to hear how you get on in the comments!
