Creating Depth in Watercolor Landscapes / Stream Painting Tutorial

In this watercolour tutorial, we’ll be painting a peaceful stream landscape while focusing on how to create depth using soft, transparent layers. This step-by-step guide shows you how to build up colour gradually, allowing that beautiful glow to shine through from the very first washes.

Inspired by a reference photo taken at a local nature reserve, I'll show the loose sketch colour swatches and then move into painting a soft, sunrise sky, misty background trees, and gentle reflections in the water. As the painting develops, we’ll increase contrast and detail in the foreground to really bring the scene to life.

Throughout the tutorial, you’ll learn how to:

- Layer watercolour to create depth and atmosphere
- Keep your washes light and transparent
- Build contrast to make your highlights pop
- Paint soft reflections and ripples in water
- Add texture and detail using a variety of brush techniques

I’ll also walk you through all the materials used, including paper, brushes, and a slightly expanded colour palette.

Materials:
Paints - Rose Madder, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Yellow, Cobalt Blue and Burnt Sienna (we will be mixing our own greens using the cobalt and yellows)
Brushes - 1 1/2", 1", 3/4" and 1/2" flat brushes, 14 Round, Small Synthetic flat, 6 Rigger and 0 Liner
Paper - Arches 100% Cotton, Cold Press and 300gsm. Paper Block 20cm x 26cm.

This tutorial is perfect if you want to loosen up your style while still creating a strong sense of depth and light in your landscapes.
