Parisians grocery shopping. French diet habits.

Recent studies actually say that obesity rate in France is at an all-time high at 12%. This is due to the emergence of a new fast food culture, junk food. Still, the French tradition of preparing meals exquisitely is still being upheld and continues to be a source of pride. Most French go to the market 2-3 times a week. The French embrace a wide range of foods, and in reasonable quantities. It’s clear that there is not one way of eating, but most French follow the same dietary pattern. Meats are often the center of attraction. Beef, pork, poultry, game meats, and charcuterie such as ham, sausage, and cold cuts are all favorites. Vegetables are carefully picked and prepared. These are then cooked into side dishes or as part of the main course. Tomatoes, onions, string beans, eggplant, carrots, zucchini, and several others. Cheeses are always served as a part of a meal, right after the main course and before the dessert which consists of fresh fruits. Breads are common in most meals especially breakfast and dinner. But no matter what French people choose to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner, one thing is for sure: snacking remains minimal. Most importantly, what separates French diet from others is the fact that the pleasure and conviviality as well as social dimension of the diet remains really strong.
