A typical French breakfast. Light, sweet and energizing.

Despite the invasion of American fast food chains and a youth culture that is more open to Anglo influences, the traditional French eating habits still live on. French breakfasts are a lot lighter than ours and are never served with meat. The French have always preferred drinking coffee in the mornings, so it is expected that a traditional French breakfast is served with coffee. However, children are allowed to drink hot chocolate or fruit juice instead. On a regular day, people eat slices of French bread served with jam and/or butter. The baguette is a French breakfast staple. Traditional breakfast includes a tartine — half a split, buttered baguette with your choice of jams to dip in your very own bowl of café. Croissants are reserved for weekends. Children prefer to eat "pain au chocolat", a croissant with chocolate filling instead.
