Rapid Resolve - Keyboard Shortcuts

The premise behind keyboard shortcuts is that they make you a faster, more efficient editor. The most efficient editor can get one job done and move on to the next and, complete more jobs overall.

DaVinci Resolve comes with hundreds of keyboard shortcuts. It would be impossible to remember them all. But, it is a good idea to memorize the few that you use a lot to speed up your work.

This video shows how to use the keyboard shortcuts for:

- Fitting your timeline to the screen (Shift Z)
- Moving to the next or previous edit (up/down arrow)
- Blade Edit Mode
- Trimming tops and tails (command/control + shift + left (top) or right (tail) bracket)
- Controlling playback with J, K and L
Using the keyboard shortcut Shift + Z will toggle the timeline view between fitting it to your screen (full extent view) and the last state that you were previously in. This is great to see your entire timeline on the screen at one time.

Using the up and down arrows jumps the playhead to the next (down arrow) or previous (up arrow) edit point.

The Blade Edit Mode enables you to put through edits on your clip wherever you click in the timeline. But it is more efficient to use Command (Mac) or Control (Windows) B to accomplish the same thing while staying in the previous tool that you were in.

Have you heard of trimming tops and tails? It is a way of dynamically trimming anything before your played (top) or after your playhead (tail). You could stop and ripple the footage, or you could try Command + Shift + left bracket (top) or Command + Shift + right bracket (tail) to accomplish the same thing. On a Windows computer, the same thing is accomplished by control + shift.

You could use the transport controls under the viewers to play and stop your video, but the J, K and L keys are much more efficient.

J - plays your video back in time from your playhead
K - stops playback
L - plays your video forward

You can hit J/L multiple times to increase the speed of the playback. Resolve can play video up to 64 times normal speed. If you want to be more granular…

- Holding down K and tapping J/L plays one frame at a time
- Holding down K and holding down J or L scrubs the clip forward or backward

These are default keyboard shortcuts but you may want to map another shortcut or change the way that Resolve has the keyboard shortcuts mapped. You do this in the Resolve Menu - Keyboard Customization (option-command K on a Mac or alt-control K on Windows).

When the window opens, you can choose what shortcuts you want to use or create your own custom shortcuts. You can even have Resolve load presets from other NLEs.
