Zooming In, Out, and to Fit in Final Cut Pro

In Final Cut Pro you can fit your timeline on your screen both horizontally and vertically. This is helpful to get a look at your complete timeline all at once. You can also zoom in/out to more closely examine your project.

There are several ways to zoom the timeline, including using menu options, the Zoom tool, sliders and keyboard commands.

Via the menu:
View - Zoom in/out.

Via keyboard commands to zoom in/out:
Command-plus (it's really the equals key because, to access the "plus" you have to hold down shift. But it is easier to remember +.) or command -.

Via the Zoom tool:

1. Click the Tools pop-up menu on the toolbar and select Zoom.
or...
Use the keyboard shortcut Z (for "Zoom").
2. The tool changes to the Zoom tool.
3. Click the selection that you want to zoom in on or click and drag a range to zoom in.
4. To Zoom OUT, hold down the option key.

You can continue to click on a zoomed in area to zoom further in.

To fit the timeline horizontally or vertically:
Horizontal:
View - Zoom to Fit
or...
Shift-Z.

Vertical:
View - Vertical Zoom to Fit
or...
Shift-Option-Z

Finally, you can use the Timeline Clip Appearances icon, located on the toolbar on the top-right corner of the timeline. From here, you will find sliders to zoom horizontally or vertically.
